Beyond the swatch
Materials are experienced in context. The same ivory can feel chalky, cool, soft or reflective depending on its surface. Begin a palette with a relationship between textures, then decide how much colour that relationship needs.
Find the counterpoint
A room made entirely of rough surfaces can feel as flat as one made entirely of smooth ones. Pair porous stone with woven fabric, or matte plaster with one gently reflective object. Contrast gives each material a clearer identity.
Let a material age
A useful question is not only how a finish looks on day one, but how it may change with use. Marks, touch and sunlight can become part of a room’s story. Choose surfaces with an understanding of their maintenance, rather than asking them to remain untouched.
