The art of leaving space

The most generous part of a building is sometimes the part that has not been filled.

Space is an invitation

A courtyard has the rare ability to feel purposeful without telling people what to do. It can become a route, a meeting point or a place to spend a few quiet minutes. Its usefulness comes from allowing several possibilities at once.

Make orientation intuitive

People feel more comfortable when they can understand where they are. Returning views, daylight and recognisable landmarks can help visitors navigate without constant signs. The imagined Courtyard Museum uses its central open space as an anchor.

Resist the final object

The last piece of furniture is not always the missing one. Sometimes a project becomes clearer when an object is removed and the space around the remaining elements can be used. Emptiness is most successful when it is deliberate and accessible.
